Stephen D. Ratcliffe, M.D., MSPH
Dr. Ratcliffe assumed the role of Director of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in July 2002. A graduate of Washington University School of Medicine, he completed his family practice training and his MSPH training at the University of Utah. Dr. Ratcliffe is passionate about family medicine and served as family practice Division Chief (1993-1998) and Residency Program Director (1998-2002) at the University of Utah. He also originated the Family Practice Obstetrics and Master Teaching Fellowships while there. He has extensive research experience in the perinatal arena in low birth weight prevention, smoking cessation in pregnancy and post-partum depression. Dr. Ratcliffe was one of the original collaborators in the ALSO course and has done extensive maternity care teaching throughout the United States. He has served as senior editor of the textbook Family Practice Obstetrics. His current projects include promotion and development of comprehensive and continuous healthcare for indigent populations and evidence-based medicine. He and his wife Anita are West Virginia natives and the parents of five children.
Christine M. Stabler, M.D.
Dr. Stabler is the Deputy Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. She serves as Chair of the Education Committee, Coordinator of the Predoctoral Program and directs curriculum development for the Program. She is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University/Jefferson Medical College BS/MD. Dr. Stabler completed her family medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital and a one-year teaching fellowship in family medicine at Temple University. After two years in practice, she joined the full-time faculty in 1986. She holds faculty appointments at Temple University, University of Pennsylvania and Penn State College of Medicine.
She is a past President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and a current Chair of the AAFP Commission on Membership and Member Services. Her family includes her husband Russ; children, Kate and Ben; and Molly, a precocious border collie.
Dr. Vnenchak is Assistant Deputy Director, joining the faculty in March 2000. Dr. Vnenchak graduated from Elizabethtown College with a B.S. degree in Biology, Magna Cum Laude, in 1985. She later attended the University of Medicine and Desntistry, New Jersey Medical School where she obtained her MD degree in 1990. In 1993 she completed her family medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital where she was also Chief Resident. After residency she joined Valley Family Physicians in Claremont, N.H. as a family physician for three years. She also served as Assistant Professor (clinical investigator) at the Family Medicine Residency at LaFayette Family Health Center in LaFayette, N.Y. Her clinical interests and focus centers on women’s and children’s health. Dr. Vnenchak and her husband have four school-aged children, including triplets.
Nikitas J. Zervanos, M.D.
Dr. Zervanos served as the full-time Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program from July 1969 until July 2002. Since his retirement, he continues to participate part-time in the program by caring for his patients, teaching physical diagnosis to medical students and precepting the residents in the program’s Family Practice Center.
He also serves as Director of the popular CME Temple University/Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Review.
Susan Angelisanti, M.D.
Dr. Angelisanti is an obstetrician/gynecologist and joined Lancaster General Family and Maternity Care in 2007. She attended medical school in St. Louis at the Washington University School of Medicine. She then completed a family practice residency here in Lancaster and is board certified in Family Medicine.
Dr. Angelisanti completed a second residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. She worked in private practice in Pottsville, PA for two years before returning to Lancaster General Health.
Matthew J. Beelen, M.D.
Dr. Beelen is an Associate Director of our residency program and also is the director of the Geriatric Fellowship. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and went on to complete his family medicine residency, a faculty development fellowship, and a geriatric fellowship here in Lancaster. He also completed a faculty development fellowship at Michigan State University. His special interests include curriculum development, evidenced-based medicine, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and dementia disorders. In addition he helps coordinate the residency geriatric curriculum.
Dr. Coco is an Associate Director, joining the faculty in May 1995, and is Director of the Health Research Center within the Family and Community Medicine Department. Dr. Coco is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a B.S. degree, the Harvard School of Public Health with an M.S. degree, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Prior to medical school, Dr. Coco spent three years in the Peace Corps in western Africa, developing preventive health programs.
He completed his residency at Contra Costa Medical Service in Martinez, Calif. in 1989 and served six years working at the community clinic in rural northern California prior to joining our faculty. Dr. Coco became certified as an HIV specialist in 2002 and sees a number of patients with this diagnosis. His research interests involve maternity care, HIV prevention, acute otitis media and cost-effective studies.
Donna Cohen, M.D.
Dr. Cohen is an Associate Director faculty member of the Family Medicine Residency Program. She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, and completed her family practice residency at Lancaster General Hospital in 2002. During residency she received the Mead Johnson Award for Family Practice Graduate Medicine. Dr. Cohen completed a two-year academic fellowship at Boston University Medical Center following residency. There she developed her research interests in women’s health and health services, which she plans to continue working on through the Health Research Center at Lancaster General Hospital. Her family includes her husband, Stu, and their daughters, Noa and Ariel.
Dr. Faizon is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist who joined the Family and Community Medicine clinical faculty in July 2004. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his OB/GYN residency at the Yale School of Medicine OB/GYN Program at Bridgeport Hospital. He served four years in the United States Air Force as the Medical Director of the 436 Medical Group OB/GYN Department. His medical interests include primary care for women and minimally invasive surgery.
Gladys Frye, MD
Dr. Frye is an Associate Director, rejoining the faculty of the Residency Program in 2007 after being in private practice in Biddeford, Maine for 6 years. Dr. Frye graduated from the University of Maine in Orono, and then completed her medical training at the University of Vermont in Burlington. She first moved to Lancaster to attend the Family Medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital in 1993, and graduated from the program in 1996. She pursued her interest in teaching by completing the Faculty Development Fellowship in 1997. Dr. Frye was a faculty member at Lancaster General for two years before returning to New England to experience Family Medicine with Obstetrics in a small group practice. Her special interests include Lactation and Women’s Health. Her family includes her husband Andy and 2 children, Andrea and Reed. Andrea has autism which has challenged their family and taught her parents patience.
Thomas J. Gates, M.D.
Dr. Gates, Associate Director, coordinates research and scholarly activities for the Residency Program. In addition, he has active teaching interests in medical ethics, evidence-based medicine and international health. He is a graduate of Williams College, Harvard Medical School and the University of Utah Family Medicine Residency (1983). He was a partner in an eight-person rural practice in Lancaster, N.H. (1983-1991), followed by three years as a staff physician at Friends Lugula Hospital in Kenya. He completed a year of graduate studies at Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind. prior to joining our faculty in August 1995.

Christian Hermansen, M.D.
Dr. "Herm" graduated from Jefferson Medical College and was introduced to Lancaster shortly thereafter. He graduated from the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency and was honored with the Society for Teachers in Family Medicine Resident of the Year award. After two wonderful years in Christian-based private practice in New Jersey, he was called to Lancaster to combine private and academic family medicine. In 2009 Dr. Hermansen accepted the added responsibilities of Medical Director of the Family Health Service Clinic, Downtown Pavilion. Feel free to discuss cooking, gardening, NFL football (Go Eagles!), or the book you’re currently reading when you see him. Just remind him to turn off his iPod when speaking with him! After work, however, Dr. Hermansen can’t wait to enjoy family life with his wife, Heather, and his two boys, Timothy and Benjamin. |

Cynthia L. Kilbourn, M.D.
Dr. Kilbourn, Associate Director, serves as the Co-Coordinator of our family medicine obstetrics service. She is a 1987 AOA graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed her residency program in family medicine at the Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, Calif. In 1990 she completed a fellowship in obstetrics at Ventura County and practiced as the Associate Director of the OB/GYN service at that medical center. From 1994-1996 she worked with Highland Physicians in Honesdale, PA where she had a busy inpatient practice including obstetrics, pediatrics, medicine, and geriatrics. She and her husband, Mark Rast, MD, joined the faculty in September 1996.
Jeffrey T. Kirchner, D.O.
Dr. Kirchner is an Associate Director and joined the faculty in August 1996. He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. After residency, he worked for the Health Care for the Homeless Project in Washington, D.C. and was later in a private group practice in Lancaster City for six years. Dr. Kirchner’s primary medical interests include HIV/AIDS, writing and medical publications. He has published extensively in numerous medical journals and textbooks. He is a former Associate Editor of American Family Physician and serves on the editorial boards of the journal’s Postgraduate Medicine and Family Practice Recertification. He is also an Associate Editor for the “Redi-Reference” bi-weekly clinical update. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Comprehensive Care Clinic, which is a federally funded Ryan White Title III site within the Family Medicine Residency Program that provides care for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Kirchner’s additional interests include medical ethics and distance running.
Dr. Larrabee joined our faculty in September 1992. He is a graduate of the University of Maine at Orona with a B.A. degree and a graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vt. He did his residency training at Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program and assumed a solo family practice in rural Maine in 1983. He was elected town physician in Guilford, Maine, and maintained an active inpatient/ outpatient practice, including emergency room care, obstetrics, ICU management and the directorship of their ambulatory diabetes program. Dr. Larrabee is Director of the Walter L. Aument Family Health Center and brings with him a wealth of talent and experience from rural, solo practice.
Jeffrey Roth Martin, M.D.
Dr. Martin is an Associate Director, joining the faculty of the Residency Program in December 1999. He graduated from Goshen College in Indiana. He attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine where he obtained his M.D. degree with honors in 1993. In 1997 he completed his family medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital. During residency he received the Mead-Johnson Award for Family Practice Graduate Medicine. He has had several international medicine experiences including working in Costa Rica, the Philippines, Zambia and Honduras in various outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. Currently Dr. Martin is involved with a grant through HRSA to help teach residents family history gathering especially as it applies to genetic information. He also coordinates the residents’ community service projects. In addition, Dr. Martin, along with Dr. Adam Wilikofsky, is involved with the interviewing curriculum. He is interested in healthcare for underserved populations and video presentations. Dr. Martin and his wife are the parents of three children.

Pamela Martin, D.O.
Dr. Martin is an Associate Director of the Obstetrical Curriculum Program, joining the faculty in 2002. She helps coordinate OB management and runs our busy OB Clinics and Surgical programs. Dr. Martin is a graduate of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Mo., and completed her residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her interests are in GYN surgery, physical examination, and high risk OB. A native of Lancaster County, she relocated to the area with her husband, two sons, and a daughter. |

Dr. Nepps is an Associate Director, a licensed psychologist and Coordinator of Behavioral Science for the Program. A graduate of St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia, Dr. Nepps received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University in 1982. She gained experience as a supervising psychologist at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, where she had previously completed her internship in clinical psychology. Dr. Nepps was a member of the faculty of the Family Medicine Residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, N.Y. from 1985 until 1988, when she joined the staff of Lancaster General Hospital. She currently coordinates teaching in behavioral science and psychiatry and supervises the behavioral science faculty. Dr. Nepps has published articles on smoking cessation, obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychotherapy outcomes. She has special interest in cognitive behavior therapy and the psychological sequelae of medical illness. Dr. Nepps is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
Dr. Olin is an Associate Director and serves as the Physician Advisor, Resource and Care Coordination and Medical Director for Patient Safety and Performance Improvement. He also coordinates the dermatology curriculum in conjunction with the Division of Dermatology at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Olin received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and is a 1976 graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. He subsequently became a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and completed a teaching fellowship in family medicine at the Temple University School of Medicine.He is the current Treasurer and past President of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society and the President of the Lancaster Chapter of the PA Academy of Family Physicians.
Alan S. Peterson, M.D.
Dr. Peterson is an Associate Director and serves as Director of Community and Environmental Medicine. He is also the editor of the weekly Family Practice Family newsletter. He precepts and conducts patient care at the Walter L. Aument Family Health Center. He received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and is a 1975 graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. After four years in private practice, he joined our teaching faculty. He has successfully completed his Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. Dr. Peterson is the Medical Director of ChildProtect, the hospital’s free immunization program, and is Medical Advisor to Lancaster County’s Immunization Coalition.
Dr. is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he received the Nikitas Zervanos, M.D Award for Family Medicine upon graduation. He completed his residency at the Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, Calif. Following graduation he developed a county-sponsored family practice clinic, Las Islas Family Medical Group in Oxnard, Calif., with several fellow residents. There he practiced full-spectrum family practice with an emphasis on obstetrics. More recently he worked with Highland Physicians in rural northeast Pennsylvania providing full-spectrum care including obstetrics, geriatrics in a high volume inpatient practice until he joined the faculty in September 1996. His special interests include healthcare systems and care of the underserved. Dr. Rast is married to Cynthia Kilbourn, MD, and they have three school-aged children. He is an avid banjo player and plays bluegrass and old time music whenever possible.
Richard Turnamian, M.D.
Dr. Turnamian is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist who joined the Family and Community Medicine Faculty in 2005. He graduated from Bucknell University and completed his medical training at Rutgers Medical School in Piscataway, NJ. After a one year internship at Lancaster General Hospital, he completed a four year OB/GYN residency at York Hospital, York, PA. After more than 18 years of private OB/GYN practice, he began his present position at Lancaster General/Women and Babies Hospital.
John C. Wood, M.D.
Dr. Wood graduated from the Pennsylvania State University and soon attended Temple University School of Medicine. A native Pennsylvanian, he was introduced to Lancaster soon thereafter. He graduated from Lancaster General Family Medicine Residency after serving as co-chief resident during his third year. He was honored with the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine resident teacher of the year award. He joined the faculty shortly after graduation and coordinates the sports and inpatient medicine curriculums. He is an avid bicycler, enjoys studying ecology and traveling with his wife who is an attorney in Chester County.
Dr. Weber is the Director of OB/GYN for Family and Community Medicine. He completed his OB/GYN residency at Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center in 1985. Prior to joining the faculty of Lancaster General Hospital, he served as Director of Medical Education at Harrisburg Hospital where he also led the Family Medicine/Obstetrics Fellowship. An enthusiastic and devoted teacher, he is strongly supportive of the program’s goals to maximize OB/GYN education. He speaks Spanish fluently and is actively involved in a variety of community outreach programs in Central Pennsylvania. He and his family live in the Hershey area.
Adam S. Wilikofsky, Ph.D.
Dr. Wilikofsky is an Associate Director and full-time member of the Residency Program’s Behavioral Science faculty. He graduated from Yale University and received masters and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his internship in clinical psychology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. Following that, he worked as a psychologist in the North Carolina public mental health system. He later returned to Beth Israel as a supervising psychologist and a member of their Predoctoral Psychology Internship faculty. He came to Lancaster General Hospital in 1988. Among other functions, Dr. Wilikofsky is the primary behavioral science consultant at the Walter L. Aument Family Health Center and directs the Interviewing and Family Therapy Curricula at Lancaster General Hospital.
